NLO Declares N-Youth League Unauthorized, Begins Disciplinary Proceedings Against Clubs

The Nationwide League One (NLO) has declared the N-Youth League an unauthorised competition and commenced disciplinary proceedings against clubs registered under its platform for allegedly participating in the league.

In a statement, the NLO Secretariat warned affiliated clubs against taking part in football competitions and activities that have not received the requisite approval from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and other relevant football authorities.

The league said participation in the N-Youth League constitutes a breach of its Rules and Regulations, adding that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against clubs found to be involved in the competition.

According to the NLO, the organisers of the N-Youth League have not provided evidence of valid recognition or authorisation for the 2026/2027 season.

The Secretariat acknowledged that the competition may have received NFF approval for the 2024/2025 season but maintained that such authorisation, if restricted to that campaign, does not automatically extend to subsequent seasons without renewed approval.

The NLO has consequently called on the organisers to disclose their identities and provide documentary evidence of the necessary authorisation to operate during the current season.

Speaking on the development, NLO Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Olushola Ogunnowo, reaffirmed the league’s commitment to enforcing football regulations and ensuring that affiliated clubs operate within Nigeria’s recognised football structure.

Ogunnowo stressed that compliance with the league’s regulations remains a fundamental obligation for every registered club, warning that participation in unauthorised competitions cannot be justified outside the provisions of the applicable rules.

The Secretariat specifically cited Article 3:01 (6) of the NLO Rules and Regulations, which prohibits registered clubs and players from participating in private leagues outside the recognised national league structure under the NFF.

The NLO said the disciplinary proceedings would be conducted in line with its established regulations, adding that clubs found guilty could face sanctions, including suspension or expulsion from the league.

All affected clubs have been advised to withdraw immediately from the N-Youth League and discontinue any related activities. The Secretariat warned that clubs and officials who disregard the directive could face the full consequences stipulated in the relevant regulations.

The league also urged its affiliates to exercise due diligence before accepting invitations to competitions, tournaments or organised match series. Clubs were advised to refer suspicious or unsolicited invitations to the Secretariat for verification before making commitments.

The NLO further emphasised that the existence of a competition, or the participation of clubs in its activities, does not automatically confer official recognition or regulatory approval.

The latest directive underscores the league’s position on regulatory compliance as it seeks to maintain discipline, protect the integrity of its competitions and ensure that affiliated clubs operate within the framework established by the NLO and the Nigeria Football Federation.
