FIBA U18 AfroBasket 2026: Egypt Edge Junior D’Tiger in Opener
Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigers began their quest for continental glory with a disappointing 95-68 defeat to arch-rivals Egypt in their opening Group A fixture of the 2026 FIBA U18 AfroBasket Championship on Wednesday in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Head Coach Michael Ikima’s side arrived at the tournament in high spirits after a flawless qualification campaign, but they were unable to match the experience and clinical execution of the defending champions, who seized control from the opening whistle and never relinquished it.
Egypt made an explosive start, dominating both ends of the floor to race to a 32-23 first-quarter lead.
Although Nigeria responded with greater intensity in the second period, the North Africans maintained their composure, winning the quarter 24-20 to carry a 56-43 advantage into the halftime break.
The third quarter proved decisive as the Junior D’Tigers struggled offensively, managing just 12 points while Egypt continued to dictate the tempo with disciplined defence and efficient shooting.
The Egyptians claimed the period 23-12 to stretch their lead beyond reach before wrapping up the contest with a 16-13 fourth-quarter advantage for a comprehensive 95-68 victory.

The result is a setback for Nigeria, who are seeking a record-extending seventh FIBA U18 AfroBasket title and their first continental crown since 2006.
Ironically, Egypt, who now hold the upper hand in recent meetings between the two nations, are the only other country to have won six titles at this level.
Despite the opening-day defeat, qualification hopes remain alive for the Junior D’Tigers.
They will now turn their attention to Friday’s crucial Group A encounter against Chad before rounding off the group stage against hosts Côte d’Ivoire on August 9.
With the tournament also serving as Africa’s qualifying event for the 2027 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in the Czech Republic.
Nigeria must recover quickly and produce convincing performances in their remaining fixtures to keep both their continental title ambitions and World Cup qualification hopes alive.
The Junior D’Tigers have already demonstrated their quality with an unbeaten run through the Zone 3 qualifiers.
Coach Ikima will be hoping his young squad can rediscover that form as they bid to reignite their campaign in Abidjan.
