Team Nigeria finished the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as Africa’s highest-ranked nation after securing 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals to finish with 24 medals overall.
Nigeria placed sixth on the final medal table, behind Australia, England, Canada, India and hosts Scotland, but emerged comfortably ahead of every other African country.
The performance marked another strong showing by Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games, with the country particularly dominant in para powerlifting, weightlifting and athletics.
Nigeria’s 10 Gold Medals
Nigeria’s campaign got off to a strong start in para powerlifting, where the country won three gold medals.
Esther Nworgu claimed the women’s lightweight title, while Folashade Oluwafemiayo dominated the women’s heavyweight event and produced a world-record 175kg lift.
Rilwan Idris completed Nigeria’s opening-day gold rush by winning the men’s heavyweight title.
Weightlifting added three more gold medals.
Edidiong Joseph Umoafia won the men’s 71kg category, while Onome Didih secured the women’s 53kg title.
Rafiatu Folashade Lawal completed the weightlifting gold haul with victory in the women’s 58kg event, setting Games records in the snatch, clean and jerk and overall total.
Athletics provided Nigeria’s final four gold medals.
Goodness Nwachukwu won the women’s para discus title with a world-record performance, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed gold in the men’s shot put.
Ezekiel Nathaniel followed with victory in the men’s 400m hurdles before Samuel Ogazi delivered one of Nigeria’s biggest moments of the Games.
Ogazi clocked 44.25 seconds to win the men’s 400m final, becoming the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games 400m title.

Oji made history by becoming the first Nigerian woman since 2006 to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the shot put.
Usoro also improved on her previous Commonwealth Games performance by winning silver in the long jump with a 6.87m effort.

Ajayi’s bronze ended Nigeria’s long wait for a Commonwealth Games men’s 100m medal, while Onojuvwevwo’s podium finish represented another significant milestone in the women’s 400m.
The mixed 4x400m relay team of Ezekiel Nathaniel, Patience Okon-George, Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo also secured bronze.
