Nigeria’s impressive outing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow continued on Monday as weightlifter Onome Didih claimed the country’s fifth gold medal with a record-breaking performance in the women’s 53kg event.
Didih produced a commanding display to finish at the top of the podium, setting three new Commonwealth Games records on her way to victory.
The Nigerian lifter opened her campaign by lifting 93kg in the snatch, establishing a new Commonwealth Games record. She then followed it up with another record-breaking effort of 113kg in the clean and jerk, before posting a combined total of 206kg, also a new Games record.
Her outstanding performance saw her finish well clear of the competition, underlining Nigeria’s dominance in weightlifting at the Glasgow 2026 Games.
India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav secured the silver medal with a total lift of 199kg, while Rebeka Groulx of Canada claimed the bronze medal after recording 178kg.
Didih’s victory further boosts Team Nigeria’s medal haul and continues the nation’s remarkable success in the weightlifting events, where Nigerian athletes have consistently delivered podium finishes throughout the competition.
The latest triumph adds to Nigeria’s growing list of gold medals in Glasgow as Team Nigeria remains on course for a memorable Commonwealth Games campaign.
