Team Nigeria’s impressive run at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Sunday as Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed a silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, earning the country’s seventh medal of the competition.
Nyong delivered a determined performance at the SEC Armadillo Arena, overcoming a difficult start in the clean and jerk to finish on the podium.
In the snatch, the Nigerian lifter opened with a successful 71kg lift before improving to a personal best of 75kg, placing third after the opening phase of the competition.
She then showed remarkable composure in the clean and jerk. After failing in her first two attempts at 93kg, Nyong held her nerve to complete the lift on her final attempt, finishing with a total lift of 168kg to secure the silver medal.
India’s Mirabai Chanu successfully defended her Commonwealth title, winning gold with a combined lift of 190kg, a new Commonwealth Games record.
Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry claimed the bronze medal with a total of 167kg, just one kilogram behind the Nigerian.
Nyong’s silver medal further strengthens Team Nigeria’s campaign in Glasgow, following an impressive opening to the Games in para powerlifting, where Nigerian athletes secured multiple gold medals.
With athletics, boxing, wrestling and more weightlifting events still to come, Team Nigeria will be hoping to add more medals as the 2026 Commonwealth Games continue in Scotland.
