Team Nigeria’s boxing campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow got off to a disappointing start as Ayomide Folly Hassan and Abdulramon Abdulwahab suffered defeats in their opening bouts to bow out of the competition.
Both Nigerian boxers were eliminated in the Round of 32 after losing to experienced opponents on Friday .
Competing in the men’s 70kg division, Ayomide Folly Hassan was beaten 4-0 on points by Lesotho’s Refiloe Thai in a closely contested contest. The defeat ended Hassan’s campaign at the first hurdle.
In the men’s 65kg category, Abdulramon Abdulwahab also failed to advance after losing by a unanimous 5-0 decision to Uganda’s team captain, Nuhu Batte, in a bout held at SEC Hall 5.
Batte’s experience proved decisive as he secured a comfortable victory to progress to the next round.
The double setback means Nigeria is yet to record a victory in the boxing event, despite the country’s impressive start in other sports at the Games, particularly para powerlifting, where Team Nigeria has already amassed multiple medals, including several gold medals.
However, the country’s hopes of success in boxing remain alive with more athletes still scheduled to compete over the coming days.
Team Nigeria Boxing Schedule
Saturday, July 25: David Akintola (Men’s 80kg Preliminary Bout)
Sunday, July 26: Kadijat Ajishola (Women’s 54kg Round of 16)
Tuesday, July 28: Patricia Mbata (Women’s 75kg Quarter-final)
Wednesday, July 29: Blessing Orakwe (Women’s 70kg Quarter-final)
Nigeria will be hoping the remaining boxers can revive the nation’s medal ambitions in the ring as competition continues at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
