Team Nigeria has opened its medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with para-powerlifter Roland Ezuruike claiming a silver medal in the men’s Lightweight Group A event.
Ezuruike delivered a determined performance on the platform to secure Nigeria’s first podium finish of the Games, giving the country’s campaign a positive start in the para-powerlifting competition.
The experienced Nigerian lifter accumulated a total of 153.9 points from two successful lifts to finish second and earn the silver medal.
The contest was decided in dramatic fashion as Ezuruike came within touching distance of winning the gold medal.
In his final attempt, the Nigerian attempted a 190kg lift, which would have not only secured the gold medal but also established a new Commonwealth Games record.
However, the lift proved just beyond his reach, leaving him to settle for silver after an impressive display of strength and resilience.
Despite narrowly missing out on the top prize, Ezuruike’s performance underlined his status as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished para-powerlifters and provided Team Nigeria with a major confidence boost early in the Games.
His silver medal marks the country’s first podium finish at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and is expected to inspire the rest of the Nigerian contingent as competition continues across several sports in Glasgow.
